"Carol of the Bells"   was written by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovich. Its original title in Ukrainian is "Shchedryk."

A Shchedryk, or Shchedrivka is a song that expresses glad tidings for prosperity and good fortune in the new year. Traditionally, carolers sing this type of song after Christmas, around the Feast of the Epiphany.
